Salary Sacrifice Pension Calculator UK: Take-Home Pay and NI Saving

By the Rational GB team · Updated 2026 · Evidence-checked

Salary sacrifice swaps part of your gross pay for a pension contribution before tax and National Insurance are worked out. The part people miss: you save employee National Insurance too, which a normal personal contribution does not give back. Enter your salary and a sacrifice amount to see what actually lands in your pension versus how little your take-home really drops. Figures use 2025/26 rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Work out your salary sacrifice

Because the money leaves your pay before National Insurance is applied, a basic-rate taxpayer keeps more of every pound than the headline 20% relief suggests, and a higher-rate taxpayer gets their full relief upfront with nothing to reclaim through Self Assessment. Keep an eye on two limits: sacrifice cannot legally take your pay below the National Minimum Wage, and total pension contributions above the £60,000 annual allowance can trigger a tax charge.
